Condition, security, tyre size and type, and tread depth. Spare tyres are not tested
 

Wheels and tyres

Road wheels must be in a fair condition and free of any severe damage. The wheels must not have any severe buckles. The road tyres must meet the minimal legal requirements. Currently the minimal legal requirement is to have 1.6mm of tread across the centre 3/4 of the tread. The tyre side walls will also be inspected for condition. Any damage to the tyre may result in an mot failure. Your spare tyre or wheel will not be subject to the MOT test. 

The exception to this rule is when your spare wheel is mounted externally on your vehicle In this case the spare wheel must be mounted in a secure fashion.
