Doors must open and close. The door
catch must retain the door securely in the closed position.
Front doors should open from inside and outside the vehicle.
Rear doors may need to be opened to gain access to testable
items such as rear seatbelts.
Test procedure
During the inspection both front doors will be opened and
checked for their condition and attachment to the vehicle. The
inspector will need to make sure that doors can be opened from
inside and out. The inspector will also make sure the doors
securely latch in the closed position.
If rear doors are fitted to your vehicle they may need to be
opened to allow the inspector into the rear of the vehicle to
test other MOT items.
Common faults
- Broken or damaged hinges that prevent the door from
being securely fixed to the vehicle. In the interests of
safety this will result in an MOT failure.
- Defective door release. Both front doors
need to be able to be opened from the inside and outside of
the vehicle. This can be caused by broken lock linkage or
damaged or missing door handles. In the interests of road
safety the passengers of a vehicle need to be able to exit a
vehicle quickly, it is for this reason that the front doors
need to be able to open from inside and out.
